Transportation

The car is usually the best way to navigate Halpern. It is especially convenient to park, and it is a very short car ride to the nearest highway, such as Autoroute Chomedey, from any home in this area. In contrast, travelling by transit can be sometimes difficult in Halpern as a result of the low service level. Nevertheless, there are about 10 bus lines, and most homes are very close to a bus stop. Halpern is not especially bike-friendly as Halpern has rather poor cycling infrastructure. Thankfully, biking is more practical in some sectors than others, and there are few elevation changes to confront bicycle riders. This area is also not very conducive to pedestrians since running common errands is inconvenient without a vehicle.

Services

It is a rather short walk to reach daycares from any location in this part of the city. However, there are only a very small number of primary schools in Halpern and therefore they can be a very long stroll away. Likewise, this part of Montréal does not contain any high schools. With regards to food, in all cases, a vehicle is required to shop for groceries. On the other hand, a cafe is often just around the corner, and residents of Halpern benefit from a few restaurants as well.

Character

There is an extensive selection of green spaces in Halpern. More specifically, numerous locations in the neighbourhood have good access to parks, such as Parc-nature du Bois-de-Liesse, since there are approximately 10 of them close by for residents to enjoy. At the same time, the tree canopy coverage for the majority of streets is fairly bad. Finally, this part of the city can be relatively noisy, as traffic can occasionally be loud during rush hour.

Housing

In Halpern, around 40% of dwellings are single detached homes, while townhouses make up most of the remaining housing stock. This area offers mainly four or more bedroom and three bedroom homes. Homeowners occupy nearly 90% of the dwellings in the neighbourhood whereas the rest are rented. Around one third of homes in this neighbourhood were constructed after the year 2000, while the majority of the remaining buildings were constructed in the 1960s and the 1980s.
