Fort Townshend

Situated within the Greater St. John's metropolitan area, Fort Townshend is a neighbourhood within St. John's, Newfoundland and Labrador.

Transportation

It is very convenient for people travelling on foot to get around in Fort Townshend; many common errands can be run without a vehicle, and numerous businesses are rather close by. In contrast, Fort Townshend is not especially appropriate for biking since the cycling network is sometimes poor, and there are a fair number of hills for cyclists to brave. Travelling by public transit is difficult in this area. Nevertheless, house owners are served by a few bus lines, and the closest bus stop is generally very close by. On the other hand, this part of the city is a fairly convenient part of St. John's for moving around by car. Most houses for sale are a very short drive from the closest highway, and it is convenient to park.

Services

It is especially easy to reach the nearest supermarket as a pedestrian from anywhere in Fort Townshend. A small variety of restaurants and coffee shops can be found as well. When it comes to education, families will value that no matter where their house is situated in this neighbourhood, both primary and secondary schools are close by. However, daycares are not particularly numerous and thus not always within a short distance.

Character

People who prefer a relaxed atmosphere will enjoy Fort Townshend. Fort Townshend is very quiet, as there are generally low levels of noise from traffic. Although this neighbourhood is not known for its vibrancy, its main streets are still quite dynamic.

Housing

The split between homeowners and renters is about even. Small apartment buildings are the most common housing type, representing roughly one quarter of dwellings in this neighbourhood, while single detached homes make up most of the remaining housing stock. This area experienced its biggest construction boom before the 1960s, so most of the available properties are from this era. This neighbourhood has a good choice of unit sizes, ranging from lofts to four or more bedrooms.
